Getting to Kyoto
- From Kansai Airport, the JR Limited Express Haruka takes you straight to Kyoto Station (about 75-80 minutes).
- From Osaka, you can take the JR Special Rapid (Osaka Station to Kyoto Station), the Hankyu Line (Umeda to Kawaramachi), or the Keihan Line (Yodoyabashi to Gion-Shijo).
Getting Around Kyoto
- Kyoto city buses get very crowded in peak tourist season. Check the Kyoto Station bus stop line on the live cam first, and if it's long, taking the subway or a private railway may be faster.
- For Gion and Kiyomizu-dera, walking from a Keihan or Hankyu station is more reliable than the bus.
- Fushimi Inari Shrine is right in front of JR Inari Station, just two stops from Kyoto Station.
Tips for Avoiding Crowds
- Popular sights are much quieter before 8 a.m. or around sunset. Fushimi Inari is open for visits 24 hours a day.
- Weekends during cherry blossom season (late March to early April) and autumn leaf season (mid-November to early December) are the busiest, so weekdays are recommended.
- Some private lanes around Hanamikoji in Gion ban photography, so be sure to check the signs.
